RFID Lab designed and built in 2012

In 2012, Terry Green and I co-founded an RFID development company focused on asset tracking within the oil and gas sector. Our initial objective was to tag and track drilling mud and related equipment, recognizing that many specialized additives and assets carry significant cost and loss risk. To support this effort, we secured a BDC loan, established a reseller partnership with Impinj, and acquired licensing rights to GlobeRanger’s RFID portal software.

While the technology proved viable, market adoption lagged behind our expectations. At the time, the industry was not yet ready to fully embrace RFID-based tracking solutions. Today, near-field RFID technology is widely used — including in virtually every bank and credit card in Canada for tap-and-pay transactions — validating the direction we pursued early on. As RFID and GPS technologies continue to mature, they are increasingly becoming integral to modern logistics and asset-tracking systems.
